The patrol boat, river (also known as river patrol boat or PBR) was an American boat used to patrol rivers and transport soldiers. Its characteristics included a very shallow draft, which was due, among other things, to the fiberglass hull and waterjet propulsion, which allowed it to sail on flat waters. The boat reached a top speed of 28.5 knots (53 km/h or 32 mph). The crew consisted of four soldiers. Typically, a first class officer served as boat captain with a gunner, mechanic and seaman on board. The lack of ice protection was compensated by a significant amount of firepower. Equipment normally included a twin-coupled M2HB 0.50 12.7mm on the bow and a single M2HB on the stern. In addition, the crew had a grenade launcher and a set of M16 rifles at their disposal. There were also more powerful configurations. The boats were used by the US Navy until the 1990s and are still popular with civilians.
